Effect of domestic cattle stocking on the nutritional condition of white-tailed deerOdocoileus virginianus (Zimmermann, 1780) was assessed using physiological indices of collected specimens. Three study areas were delineated in McCurtain County, Oklahoma (heavy cattle stocking), and Howard (moderate to light cattle stocking) and Pike (no cattle stocking) counties, Arkansas that were similar with respect to soils and vegetation but differed with respect to cattle stocking rate. Female white-tailed deer were collected from study areas in February and August 1987–1988 to assess nutritional condition. Deer collected from study areas exposed to cattle grazing in February had lower carcass weights, fat attributes (femur marrow and kidney fat), and reproductive rates (fetuses/doe) than deer that were not exposed to cattle grazing. In August, deer collected from the moderate cattle area had heavier eviscerated carcass weights, serum glucose, albumin, and albumin/globulin ratios than deer collected from the heavy cattle area. Results suggest that if cattle are removed from managed forests in winter, nutritional condition of deer would be improved because of reduced competition for food. 相似文献

Effects of noradrenaline (NA) and dopamine (DA) on apoptosis of nonapeptidergic neurons of supraoptic (SON) and paraventricular (PVN) nuclei of hypothalamus of male Wistar rats was studied in experiments in vitro. Incubation of hypothalamic sections in the medium with added NA was shown to induce an increase of the amount of pro-apoptotic protein caspase-9 in the nonapeptidergic neurons of the SON and PVN. A comparison of the level of neuronal NO-synthase with the level of caspase-9 expression in these neurons allows concluding that NA leads to initiation of apoptosis in neurons of the SON with mediation by nitric oxide (NO). In the PVN, the NA-induced initiation of apoptosis does not depend on the NO level. Addition of DA to the incubation medium results in an increase of the caspase-9 amount only in PVN neurons regardless of the NO content. The absence of neuronal death after the NA-induced increase of the caspase-9 level in the cells of SON and PVN seems to be due to increased expression of the anti-apoptotic protein bcl-2. Protection of the PVN neurons from death after addition of DA to the incubation medium is probably independent of the expression level of bcl-2. Thus, in the nonapeptidergic neurons of the SON and PVN, which are related by origin and by performed functions, modulation of the process of apoptosis by elevated concentrations of NA and DA is realized by different mechanisms. 相似文献

The material was analyzed on the main problems of genetics of mammalian spermatogenesis, sex determination, its reversion and other defects from the standpoint of current cytological and molecular-genetic concepts of functional activity of the parental genomes after fertilization and behavior of their chromosomes at the early embryonic stages. On the basis of this analysis, a hypothesis has been proposed, which explains a high percentage (50% or more) of early embryonic mortality in placental mammals under the conditions of natural and extracorporeal fertilization, as well as regular appearance of defects in the course of natural sex determination, including the appearance of representatives of both sex minorities. The majority of elevated O(2) consumption associated with short and vigorous activity occurs during recovery, thus an assessment of associated metabolic costs should also examine the excess post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC). This study examined O(2) uptake during exercise, EPOC and distance traveled during 5-, 15-, 60- and 300-s sprints at maximal treadmill intensity in Dipsosaurus (N=10; 74.3+/-2.1 g). EPOC (0.08, 0.14, 0.23 and 0.18 ml O(2) g(-1), respectively) was large (80-99% of total elevated O(2) consumption) and increased significantly between 5 and 60 s. The cost of activity (C(act); ml O(2) g(-1) x km(-1)), intended to reflect the total net costs associated with the activity, was calculated as the total elevated O(2) consumption per unit distance traveled. C(act) decreased with activity duration due to proportionally larger increases in distance traveled relative to EPOC volume, and is predicted by the equation C(act)=14.7 x activity duration (s)(-0.24). The inclusion of EPOC costs provides an ecologically relevant estimate of the total metabolic cost of locomotor activity. C(act) exceeds standard transport costs at all durations examined due to the addition of obligate recovery costs. Requirements of R-, S-, and M-dissociants of Pseudomonas aeruginosaK-2 strain in glucose, nitrate, and phosphate, as well as the error of determination, have been calculated from the data of 250 experiments on their batch cultivation on the media with the various initial content of these resources. The resource requirements of R- and S-dissociants appear indistinguishable within the error limits. The requirements of M-dissociant significantly differ from those of R- and S-forms; however, due to specific growth of the M-form, the confidence intervals of the measured values can overlap with those of R-space and S-forms. The obtained requirement values allow an evaluation of the studied resources concentration limiting the culture growth. 相似文献
